Mission

The Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts (èƽ) is committed to graduate-level education in philosophy, aesthetics, and art theory. Our PhD program uniquely intertwines research in art and philosophy. èƽ’s distinctive core curriculum cultivates the artist-philosopher as a critical thinker of the future, positioning our graduates at the forefront of theoretical humanities in the U.S. and internationally. Our innovative fusion of distance learning and on-site residencies expands student connections and cultural exchanges, preparing our graduates to assume leadership roles in the global community.

Statement of Purpose

èƽ’s impact is accomplished through a distinctive core curriculum that help students develop skills to critically articulate issues in the history of ideas and art within an academic framework; to assume professional positions in academia and in the art marketplace; and to situate their creative practice or field of research within the broader historical and cultural landscape.
